WALKING TO GIVE EVERYTHING
Mark 12:41-44 & Luke 21:1-4
One of the greatest hallmarks of early Christianity is the whole hearted willingness of the believers to sell all their properties and surrender the proceeds to the church (Acts 2:45 & 3:36-37). This is the fullness of what we confess when we sing the hymn, “all to Jesus I surrender, all to Him I truly give.” When we have fully accepted the lordship of Jesus over our life, there must be the release of our personal control in everything we have which leads us to give it all to Jesus. This is by offering everything for the benefit of others who are in need and especially for the use of the church, including our very life.
As a result of His observation on how people give their offerings to the temple, Jesus commended a particular widow who out of her poverty gave more than everyone else that day. Though it might be two pieces of coins, but for Jesus “this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury (Mark 12:43 & Luke 21:3)” because she gave all that she has for a day.
At times, we take pride that we have given our tithes in full and sometimes with some additional offerings from our surplus. There are even some who claim that they have complete surrendered everything to God for the use of His church but are still the very ones in control of it. The teaching of Jesus on material wealth is clear; it is just a matter of asking ourselves “where your treasure is” (Luke 12:34) or on which is our heart focused on.
What does it mean to give to God? What does it mean to surrender all to Jesus? How will you live your life of complete surrender to God?
MEMORY VERSE
Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:1-3)
